Although it seems unlikely today, Dunwich was a thriving town with 8 churches in the 11th and 12th Centuries and was the capital of East Anglia. Little remains of that glorious past as over the years the sea has claimed the land and silted up the harbour but the museum in St James' street gives a fascinating insight into the history of Dunwich and it is easy to imagine what it looked like 800 years ago as you stroll along the cliff top looking out to the North Sea, where legend says you can still hear the tolling of church bells!
